  • Gorom-Gorom: On the Desert Shores - The Sahel region in the north of Burkina Faso receives less than 600 mm rainfall a year and temperatures sometimes reach 50 °C. The Sahel extends beyond the borders of Burkina Faso, from the Horn of Africa to the Atlantic Ocean, and borders the Sahara to its north, and the fertile region of the Sudan to the South. If the rainy season is "good" then the river fills up and the people around the town of Gorom-Gorom can water their crops and animals. (From France in French, Fulani, Songhai and Tamasheq, English subtitles and renarration.) Tierra del Fuego: At the Ends of the Earth - La Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego is an island at the extreme southern tip of South America. An island of mountains, glaciers, plains and moors. A harsh climate, covered in snow for eight months of the year, inhospitable, almost barren, and while in the past it drew pioneers, today it fires the imagination of tourists who come from all over the world just so they can say "I was there - I went to the end of the earth". Presented by Silvio Rivier. (From France, in French and Spanish, English subtitles and renarration.) (Documentary Series) (Rpt) G CC

    Summer Of Love

  • Send to a friend
  • The story of San Francisco's Haight Ashbury district during the summer of 1967, from its utopian beginnings to the chaos, filth and widespread drug use that ultimately signalled the end. Written and directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Gail Dolgin and Vicente Franco, it begins by explaining the growth of the hippie movement, which found a home in the city's low-rent Haight Ashbury sector. It was born of idealistic youths who'd grown up with post-WWII affluence but were now dealing with Vietnam, racism, and the threat of nuclear annihilation. It made them question whether material affluence was the only way to live. (From the US, in English) (Documentary) (Rpt) PG (D,A) CC WS

Features interviews with Nazi hunters Beate Klarsfeld, Ephraim Zuroff and Serge Klarsfeld; former members of the US secret service and army officers William Gowen, James Milano and Wolfgang Robinow and former SS members. (From Germany, in German, English and French, English subtitles) (Documentary Series) (Final) (Rpt) M WS

  • Movie - - The only world Alex knows is ultra-violence and rape. He has his own gang and on one outing, is betrayed by the members of his gang after he accidentally kills a woman. Alex is sentenced to 14 years in prison where he hears about a new form of "aversion therapy" that has the effect of not only repelling criminals from any form of violence permanently, but earns a very generous prison remission for the prisoner treated. One of the most violent and gripping films ever made incorporating much sardonic humour. A Stanley Kubrick classic that was banned in many countries on initial release. Stars Malcolm McDowell, Patrick McGee and Michael Bates. (From the UK, in English) ((1971) (Rpt) MAV (A,N,V) CC

  • From director, Alex van Warmerdam, Grimm is a quirky modern day fairytale gone awry. A dark and comic take on Hansel and Gretel, the film begins one winter's day when Marie and her brother Jacob are abandoned by their unemployed father in the woods. In his coat, Jacob finds a note from his mother urging them to go to their uncle in Spain. The perilous journey finds them held captive for eating a farmer's dog and when they escape, Marie is forced to prostitute herself for money. When they finally arrive in Spain things go from bad to worse when Marie marries a wealthy surgeon and his intentions soon become clear. Nominated for the Golden Seashell at the 2003 San Sebastian Film Festival and stars Halina Reijn, Jacob Derwig, Carmelo Gomez, Elvira Minguez and Ulises Dumont. (From the Netherlands, in Dutch and Spanish, English subtitles) (Black Comedy) (2003) (Rpt) MA (V,S,A) WS
